Leaders in Training (LIT) is a program designed for campers ages 15 to 17. As the name implies, it is intended to teach leadership skills to teens through formal training sessions (lectures, etc.), and structured experiences at camp and local venues in the Whittier area. There are also social events to strengthen unity and group belonging.

During Whittier camp sessions, LITs are in their own cabin. The program is different from that of the regular campers, as it focuses on leadership development. Part of the time LITs shadow cabin groups to practice problem-solving skills, learn how to effectively manage and positively interface with children from many cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, ethnicities, personal belief systems, emotional maturity levels, and traumas.

The LITs also meet at locations outside camp, such as one of the two Whittier YMCA branches, for training, leadership development, and seminars. They are invited to be active and help plan and execute special events held at the Whittier YMCA branches and/or camp that are open to the public to further refine their leadership and people interaction skills.

It is hoped that those who go through the LIT program will continue their personal growth and leadership development journey by becoming camp counselors and other volunteer staff members.
